چکیده

The mechanism of sulfate adsorption on goethite was investigated in situ using attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy. Sulfate adsorption was investigated at ionic strengths between 0.005 and 0.1 M, reactant concentrations between 5 and 500 µM, and pH values between 3.5 and 9.0. It was determined that sulfate forms both outer-sphere and inner-sphere surface complexes on goethite at pH less than 6. At pH values greater than 6, sulfate adsorbs on goethite only as an outer-sphere complex. The relative amount of outer-sphere sulfate surface complexation increased with decreasing ionic strength. The spectrum of sulfate adsorbed on goethite was also compared to the infrared spectrum of synthetic schwertmannite, an iron(III) oxy-hydroxy-sulfate. It was determined that in situ spectra of both schwertmannite and adsorbed sulfate are quite similar, suggesting that a continuum of outer- and inner-sphere sulfate occurs in both cases. Spectroscopic studies of Pb(II)-sulfate interactions at the goethite-water interface

We used a combination of in situ attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATRFTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy to conduct molecular scale studies on Pb(II)-sulfate interactions at the solid-water interface of goethite at pH 4.5, 5.0, and 6.0. Both the ATR-FTIR studies (probing sorbed SO4 in a flow cell setup as a function of the Pb concen...

DIVISION S-2—SOIL CHEMISTRY Selenate and Selenite Sorption on Iron Oxides: An Infrared and Electrophoretic Study

We studied selenate and selenite sorption by amorphous Fe oxide [am-Fe(OH)3] and goethite (a-FeOOH) as a function of time (25 min-96 h), pH (3-12), ionic strength (0.01-1.0 M NaCl), and total Se concentration (0.0001-1.0 M). We examined sorbed selenate and selenite by in situ attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier tr...

Spectroscopic study of extracellular polymeric substances from Bacillus subtilis: aqueous chemistry and adsorption effects.

Reactions at ionizable functional groups in extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) from Bacillus subtilis are found to affect aqueous phase conformation and adsorption to mineral surfaces. Characterization by HPSEC, XPS, and FTIR indicates a wide range in apparent molecular mass (0.57-128 kDa), with functional group composition depending on cell growth phase (exponential vs stationary) and lo...

An Investigation on In-situ Strength and Bonding Strength of Polymer Modified Concretes (PMC) as Repair Overlays on Conventional Concrete Substrate

Polymer modified concrete (PMC) consists of Portland cement concrete with a polymer modifier. Its advantages are proper bonding strength to substrate concrete, high tensile and flexural strength and low amount of shrinkage and permeability. Using PMC overlays can be considered as a method for preservation of damaged concrete structures due to their suitable performance and durability. In this r...
